Tonight will be Chris Walker's first regular season game as a head coach.
The Texas Tech Red Raiders men’s basketball team, led by first-year head coach Chris Walker, opens the regular season at home tonight against the Prairie View A&M Panthers. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on Fox College Sports.
The Panthers are led by seventh-year head coach Byron Rimm II. Rimm is winless against Big 12 teams in seven attempts, but don’t let that fool you. The Panthers are loaded with experience as they return all five starters from last years 14-18 (10-8 SWAC) team.
Offensively, the Panthers are led by senior guard Jourdan DeMuynck. The 6-foot-6, 190-pound guard led Prairie View in scoring last season with 10.1 points per game, and added 4.3 rebounds per game – good for third on the team. DeMuynck season high of 27 points last year came on the road against Alcorn State.
Behind DeMuynck, Louis Munks added 9.6 points and 2.7 rebounds per game, and Ryan Gesiakowski was third with 9.5 points and 2.4 rebounds for the Panthers in 2011-12.
With five returning seniors, six returning juniors, and all seven of their top scorers from last year, Prairie View is the preseason favorite to win the SWAC.
The Red Raiders are 5-0 all time against the Panthers. The last meeting resulted in a 82-53 Tech win in Lubbock in 2000.
