Best Rivalry in College Football

  • Well everyone, we have arrived to rivalry week in the college football season. With that being said, what do you think is the best rivalry in college football? Why do you think it is the best rivalry? Is there a rivalry game that you have to watch if it is not your favorite? Which one is the most competitive?

That's a tough question. For me personally it depends on the year and the implications for the game. I think Michigan-Ohio State, Alabama-Auburn, and Florida-Georgia have to be mentioned.

One I really like is Oklahoma State-Oklahoma. I love rooting against both schools so I'm guaranteed to see one of them lose.

I agree about the implications and year. Myself, I think the Iron Bowl (Auburn-Alabama) is the best one in college football. The fact that the state of Alabama does not have any professional sports adds to the rivalry. Also the last three national champions have came from this game (and maybe a chance for a fourth).

  • When it comes to rivalries I go out of my way to watch or pay attention to, I always keep an eye on the Apple Cup between Washington and Washington State. That game just seems to be one of the best rivalry games each and every year. Each game is competitive more times than not. The fact that going into the 2008 Apple Cup, Washington was 0-10 while Washington State was 1-10, yet the two teams had arguably one of the best games of that season in college football (WSU 16-13 in 2OTs). It says a lot about the rivalry.

  • Also the Army-Navy game is one I pay attention to, even if it is for a few minutes. I love seeing both service academies in the stadium and after each game, both teams stand one next to another listening to each others school songs. I think it is truly special.

The Apple Cup came through again. Good win for Washington State, 31-28 come from behind win in overtime. One of the better rivalries in the nation.

Yeah that was a nice comeback. Didn't see it coming.

With that rivalry, expect the unexpected.

  • The rivalry i miss and especially this year was the Texas v Texas A&M game. As much as i hate A&M, i hate Texas 12X that much. It would have been glorious to see A&M destroy Texas... But it didnt happen :(

  • There is a slight possibility that Texas and Texas A&M could meet in the Cotton Bowl. It is a stretch, but possible.

  • I just thought about this one, but the Utah - BYU is pretty fierce. I wouldn't say it isn't the best, but when you talk about one not liking the other, this is it.

Does it get pretty ugly? I haven't looked into that one much.

Yeah it does. It's known as the Holy War. BYU is a private university of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The games are more times than not really good. Outside of the field it is pretty fierce. I have heard stories of non-mormon Utah fans ripping up copies of The Book of Mormon in front of BYU supporters. I myself think that that goes too far. Those have to be radical fans to say the very least.

Oh wow, yeah I'd say so. Isn't there a majority population of mormans at Univ. of Utah too?
