"You Call It" - Week 6 ft. E.J. Whitley

  • The special guest this week is former Texas Tech offensive lineman E.J. Whitley. Whitley started at least one game at every position on the Red Raiders o-line from 2003 to 2006 and was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the 2007 NFL Draft.

A first this week, we've brought in a member from our message boards, NDGuyinFL, to pick this week's games too.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    (Th.) Texas @ Iowa State

    Landon: Texas
"I wanted to pick Iowa State so bad but I think Texas will find a way to pull it out and win."

    Weston: Texas
"Despite Texas being underachievers so far this year, Iowa State looks even worse. The Longhorns just have too much talent compared to the Cyclones and there will be room for mistakes for UT."

    Duncan: Texas
"I'm starting to get redundant but I would have to go with Texas due to the ability to out talent Iowa state."

    Reese: Texas
"Based on talent alone, Texas wins by a ton. That being said, this game will likely be closer than it should be."

    Curtis: Texas
“I get the feeling that this could be a trap game for Texas, esp. with QB David Ash not able to play. Texas wins by taking over in the third quarter and making enough plays on the offensive side of the ball.”

    Whitley: Texas
"Coming off a win over Kstate and a bye week I think Texas get back to the basics and runs Gray and Brown all game. ISU will keep it close but UT prevails."

    NDGuyinFL: Texas
"Despite their struggles thus far this season, Texas is an athletically-superior team facing a lowly 1-2 Iowa State team. Iowa State is 92nd against the run after facing UNI, Iowa, and Tulsa so I am expecting a big day on the ground for the Longhorns."
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kansas State @ No. 21 Oklahoma State

    Landon: Oklahoma State
"Last week's loss ignites OSU to click on all cylinders and play its best football of the season, so far."

    Weston: Oklahoma State
"The Cowboys were embarrassed with a huge upset last week in Morgantown. They get back on track this week by beating the Wildcats by a few touchdowns."

    Duncan: Oklahoma State
"They are still the favorite in the Big 12, despite their slip up against WVU. They will bounce back this week against KSU."

    Reese: Oklahoma State
"OSU will be looking for a big bounce back win at home, and it should have the offense to do so."

    Curtis: Oklahoma State
“This game should be very close, however the Cowboys sneak by with key defensive plays in the fourth.”

    Whitley: Oklahoma State
"After a rough outing for JW last week against WVU, I see an offensive explosion coming at home for OSU."

    NDGuyinFL: Oklahoma State
"Oklahoma St. is going to put up big numbers offensively as they always do, but the key to winning is going to be their coverage of WR Tyler Lockett who accounted for 237 of the 275 yards passing QB Jake Waters had last week. If they can minimize his impact, Oklahoma St. should win this game."
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
West Virginia @ No. 17 Baylor

    Landon: Baylor
"I don't expect this to be a cakewalk by any means, but I think Baylor pulls it out and comes out humbled. West Virginia is pretty unpredictable (see blowout at Maryland then win over OSU), so I'm not sure that I can say it's Baylor's 'first real test,' but I'm not sure that I can't say that either.... Either way, this is the best team Baylor has faced this year and I think Baylor's stats will be deflated a solid amount, but they still win."

    Weston: Baylor
"West Virginia showed that they can hang with the top teams in the Big 12 last week when they play well, but Baylor has too much offensive firepower to lose this game."

    Duncan: Baylor
"Baylor is rock solid right now and will get a good test against WVU but will come out victorious in the fourth quarter."

    Reese: Baylor
"Baylor's offense has been putting up ridiculous numbers, but it has yet to play anyone. Baylor's defense is not great (see Alex Neutz's [Buffalo] stat line against Baylor), but it should have plenty of offense to get the win at home."

    Curtis: Baylor
“This won’t be an encore of the 70-63 matchup we saw last season in Morgantown, but it will be high scoring. Baylor just simply outscores the Mountaineers.”

    Whitley: Baylor
"WVU has proven to play tough on the road. Their D kept them in the game at OU but the offense for Baylor is soaring right now. Averaging over 750 YPG and nearly 70 PPG. WVU QB's are banged up and won't keep up with that Baylor offense."

    NDGuyinFL: Baylor
"They are currently 1st in the FBS in passing yards per game, 5th in rushing yards per game, 1st in points scored per game, and 2nd in points allowed. They will be prepared for their conference opener at home and win in convincing fashion. I expect a lot of points and 500+ yards of offense from the Bears."
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    TCU @ No. 11 Oklahoma

    Landon: Oklahoma
"I might change my mind a few more times this season, but right now Oklahoma is my pick to win the conference. I don't expect them to go undefeated, if they do win though. I think the Sooners win this one by one or two scores."

    Weston: Oklahoma
"It's so hard to win in Norman and TCU has had some serious offensive problems so far this year. TCU defense keeps this one respectable, but the Sooners win."

    Duncan: Oklahoma
"I think TCU could come out with the upset but the Sooners are too strong on both sides of the ball. Look for a defensive battle out of this game. Sooners win by a field goal."

    Reese: Oklahoma
"OU is rolling, and Norman is always a tough place to play on the road."

    Curtis: Oklahoma
“The Sooners had a statement win last week against Notre Dame and I look for them to continue with the momentum against this TCU squad. TCU will keep it close, but OU wins by making the necessary plays on defense.”

    Whitley: Oklahoma
"TCU offense is sputtering without Pachall but their D is keeping them in games. TCU's D keeps them in it but a heavy dose of Clay and Williams will wear them down."

    NDGuyinFL: Oklahoma
"TCU doesn’t seem to be clicking and Oklahoma is proving themselves to be formidable both on the ground and defensively. They frustrated the Irish last week and ran at will against a defense I believe is far more talented than TCU’s."
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No. 20 Texas Tech @ Kansas

    Landon: Texas Tech 45-13
"The Red Raiders defense wins this game. I could see another defensive touchdown this week. Plus, at the end of the day, Tech is simply the more talented team. I don't think you'll see a perfect game offensively by any means, but I think the Red Raiders will put together several drives and rack up more points than the Jayhawks can answer for. The defensive front seven for Tech has a big day and Eric Ward finally breaks out with normal Eric Ward stats."

    Weston: Texas Tech 48-21
"Kansas will take advantage of Tech's lack of running game, but the passing attack will surge this Saturday. Amaro, Ward and Grant all have big days and Baker Mayfield will also show his dual threat abilities with 60+ rushing yards and 300+ passing yards. Tech gives up three touchdowns, but still wins in a rout."

    Duncan: Texas Tech 35-21
"Even though Kliff is still trying to find his run game I believe Tech will balance out his attack with the passing and defensive game. Matt Wallerstedt and company is on roll and if his defense can stay healthy through the remainder of the game, Tech will win once again. Kliff must get better at his run attack in this game because if he don't equal out or have a greater run game than Kansas then it's going to be a long night for the Red Raiders."

    Reese: Texas Tech 35-14
"No team should ever be overlooked, but if Tech can find its offense, Tech should have no trouble winning this game. Tech's defense has been very solid so far this season, and Kansas has had its struggles on offense."

    Curtis: Texas Tech 31-20
“With the extra week off, Tech got some needed rest before diving into conference play. The Red Raider defense should be excited to face a pocket passing quarterback in Jake Heaps. I look for the Tech defense to cause a couple of turnovers and continue the success they have had this season. The offense will continue to look for TE Jace Amaro to move the chains, but look out for Jakeem Grant to contribute a lot in this one. Texas Tech wins this one that is closer than what people might think.”

    Whitley: Texas Tech 42-14
"TTU has found a Defense. Tech's O even with injuries continues to make big plays when needed. Kansas has no one to cover Amaro and Techs Oline and running game are gradually finding their way. Kansas O is struggling to score points and with a much improved and opportunistic D."

    NDGuyinFL: Texas Tech 38-13
"While Texas Tech is still searching for their long-term answer at QB, they will be rotating multiple QBs who have all shown flashes of brilliance. Despite their lack of rushing yards, Coach Kingsbury uses screens and short passes as his run game and has done so very effectively. The Jayhawks enter this game with a deceptive 2-1 record. They finally got their first FBS win of the Charlie Weis era and have shown improvement from week to week led by transfer QB Jake Heaps and RB James Sims. Despite their improvements and Tech’s lack of depth in the front seven, I have a hard time imagining Kansas slowing down Tech’s passing game and expect a great game from Mayfield and Webb."

  • The refs are trying so hard to give this game to Texas. It'll be worth it if Mack keeps his job. Anyone else catch Mike Davis's dirty cheap shot?

  • Only one picking Northwestern. Hmm. Haha.

What are your thoughts on them? I think Ohio State going to Northwestern could get caught napping. Wisky is good, but I think Pat Fitzgerald is going to be preaching a 'statement game' to his guys and they are going to be playing the most inspired football we've seen from Northwestern.

  • As was I. I'm still not completely sold on the Randy Edsall Project that is Maryland.

  • I didn't so much take into account the colder weather in Kansas for my prediction. It is what it is, but based on how it's started I'm thinking more of a 31-21 type game.

  • Yeah, it's cold up here buddy. I don't know about Lawrence, but we had 36 this morning in South Dakota. On the other side of the state (I'm in the East), they got over a foot of snow yesterday.

    Let the good times roll!

  • Well, glad I didn't pick Maryland....

Illinois still has time to get it together against Nebraska, but it'll be tough to pull it out.

    Iowa leads at the half.

  • The Red Raiders have put up 37 unanswered points and our initial predictions are looking about right.

  • And that's what I meant about nothing believing in the Randy Edsall Project yet. Haha. 63-0.

  • Dang man.. Haha. That Northwestern pick could've evened the field for me. I thought the officiating was sub-par at best. Oh well.. You win some and you lose some.

I appreciate the opportunity to play.
